How Is Your First-Year Student Spending Thanksgiving Break?

Thanksgiving Break

Whether your Wildcat is coming home for Thanksgiving or not, we know they are certainly ready for this short break.

As you and your student prepare for the next month ahead, it’s good to be aware of the potential for a lot of big first moments they may be looking forward to (or even dreading). This may be your student’s first-time home since leaving for college, or this could be their first time missing a holiday with loved ones. No matter their plans, your Wildcat’s first collegiate “finals season” is next.

It’s normal if your student seems overwhelmed right now. Additionally, if they aren’t coming home for the break, you may be feeling sad, guilty, and homesick for them – and they could be feeling it, too.

Just know, this is something many other families are experiencing and navigating, as well. And not just at the University of Arizona, but pretty much everywhere – especially for first-year students.

If your Wildcat is staying on-campus for the break, know that they are most definitely not alone (although it may feel like it to them). Encourage your student to order a Thanksgiving To-Go meal and reach out to their RA if they are looking for company during the break.

Whether your Wildcat is staying on-campus or returning home, don’t forget they might also be feeling a bit burnt out and/or they are likely feeling the pressure of the end of the year. This is a good time to encourage and allow them to rest, recover and recharge. This may look like a lot of sleep, staying up late with family members or friends that they haven’t seen in a while, or even needing to catch up on some schoolwork.

We hope your Wildcat has a fantastic break!
