Summer Classes – What Better Time to Get Ahead

May 15, 2020

Are your Wildcat’s summer plans still up in the air?

We’ve heard from many students that due to COVID-19,  summertime vacations have been cancelled, internships are postponed, and seasonal jobs have not yet opened .

Being unable to make future plans is extremely difficult. But this summer presents a great opportunity for your Wildcat to get ahead academically with online summer classes.

Here are some of the perks of taking classes online this summer

Flexibility Down the Road

Getting ahead now can mean a less intensive workload down the road. This could eventually open up a student’s schedule for opportunities to engage in internships or externships, work, or other opportunities when the time comes in those later years of college.

Shorter Class Durations

Many students enjoy summer classes because they are not as long as the same class offered in the fall and spring semesters, allowing time to still enjoy summer activities when things open back up.

Smaller Class Sizes

Many classes – even the online ones, offer smaller class sizes, giving your student more access and digital interaction with the professor and a closely-knit online community to engage with.

Hope Osterholt, Student Marketing Assistant in Housing & Residential Life and senior graduating this May, says:

“As a business major, the first semester of The Eller College of Management is jam-packed and kept me busy. Being able to focus on my core classes and not worry about Gen Eds made it a lot easier for me to do well in my classes during my academic year. I was also able to take less units this semester, which allowed me to focus on interviews and searching for a job after graduation.

If your Wildcat is thinking about graduating early or taking classes outside their major, summer can be the perfect time to start them on that path.”

To find out what classes your student can take over the summer, have them browse classes on UAccess uaccess.arizona.edu or reach out to their Advisor.

Other suggestions for your student this summer:

  • Get an online certification in another passion area like becoming a personal trainer, cycling instructor, becoming certified in CPR & First Aid, or even becoming a Pokemon Professor
  • Pick up a new hobby like scrapbooking, learning a musical instrument, chalk art, or baking
  • Have a weekly board game night, play a game outside, have a water balloon fight

Encourage your Wildcat to stay engaged and curious, connect with friends new and old, and remind them that things will get better. However your Wildcat family spends this summer, Housing & Residential Life is sending you well wishes for a safe and joyful summer.
