Learn More about The A Center and Major Exploration
In 1990, the University of Arizona offered 130 unique degree programs; in 2020, that number has more than doubled to 271! With hundreds of options to choose from, it can be overwhelming for incoming students to select a major when they begin their application process.
At The A Center, we are here to help in the major exploration process. We advise and guide students who are undeclared, in transition between majors, and those who are interested in health professions and/or law school after graduation from the University of Arizona. Our major exploration advisors offer support to undeclared students and those who are going through an academic major transition by meeting with students for an in-depth discussion about their interests, in an effort to help them find the major that suits them best, and help them achieve academic success. Pre-health and pre-law advisors are available to work with all University of Arizona students on the pathway to a health or law profession. Our goal is to offer a welcoming environment where students feel at ease to ask for guidance.
As parents and family, The A Center often receives common questions regarding the major selection process:
- If my student changes their major, does it mean they will be behind?
Not necessarily! In their first year, many students are taking courses that work towards the general education requirements, which every major on campus requires for graduation. If a student would like to change their major, we recommend they meet with the advisors for their new major to evaluate how a major change will affect their pathway to graduation.
- Will my student’s major choice affect the career opportunities they will have after graduation?
Most likely, no! There are a few majors, like engineering, that require specific skills to obtain a job in the field after graduation; however, most majors do not lead to a direct career field. We recommend students choose a major that interests them, while involving themselves in co-curricular opportunities to gain the skills employers are looking for in applicants.
- Which major does my student need for graduate programs in health? Law school?
Any major! At The A Center, our Pre-Health and Pre-Law advisors can assist students from all majors in achieving their goals in the health or legal professions. Advisors help with pre-requisite course information, opportunities for engagement, resources for test preparation, personal statement reviews, and interview techniques, which are all vital for a successful application to professional schools.
- How can I support my student in exploring major opportunities?
Encourage your student to choose a major that they will enjoy! Often times, students want to please their parents, family, and friends with their major choice, but it is important that they are happy with their choice, too. Recommend your student to explore their interests, skills, and values when considering majors. Academic advisors at The A Center can provide guided assistance in helping your student explore majors.
