Students & Parents

What you need to know about coronavirus (COVID-19)

As of March 13, 2020

  • Students who live in the dorms should not return to live on campus, provided they have suitable alternative living arrangements. These students are welcome to return to campus briefly to collect belongings.

  • Students who live in the dorms who do not have a suitable alternative should return to campus. Residence halls, food service, Campus Health, libraries, and computer labs are open, and will remain open, to support them.

  • If you were living in the dorms, Housing and Residential Life will communicate the process for obtaining your belongings in the coming days.

  • Visit the University Libraries website for information about hours, availability and other services — such as borrowing laptops.

A Message from the Dean of Students

March 15, 2020

Dear Scholars,

Wow, no one expected that our Wildcat community, our nation and our world would experience such an unnerving and all-consuming pandemic disease. We are thinking of each and every one of you and working to support you.

You have received multiple email messages from the University President, Provost, faculty and staff, and other departments with critical information. There is a lot to process. You might be grappling with concerns regarding your health and wellness, deciding whether to remain in Tucson or go home, and wondering about the transition to online classes. It is understandable if you are feeling overwhelmed – we are here for you.

With classes moving online, you may need to have access to reliable Wi Fi service to access your course materials. The Office of Instruction and Assessment is helping instructors to develop alternatives to ensure students have access to coursework. Your instructors will probably ask you about your Wi Fi availability and if they do not, please make them aware of your access. Some internet services are providing temporary free access for students. Please do check in with your local internet provider for more information. If you are in Tucson, our Main Library and the Health Sciences Library will be open daily and their hours are posted online.

As the parent of two college students, I understand the concerns your parents and family are experiencing, and as the Dean of Students, I know we have students with additional concerns related to food and housing insecurity and who, in some cases, may not have a supportive family structure to rely upon.

We are also focused on your physical and mental health. Therefore, all students will have access to the Student Union, Campus Health, Main and Health Sciences Libraries, Campus Recreation, and other resources. To communicate with you, your academic advisors, instructors, and other administrative employees may request telephone or online meetings (i.e., Zoom, Skype).

What concerns me most is that your college experience is impacted; however, as challenging as it may seem now, we grow and learn from these situations. Please do not hesitate to contact the Dean of Students Office at:

Telephone: 520.621.7057
Email: DOS-deanofstudents@arizona.edu (monitored regularly)

The COVID-19 situation is changing rapidly, so I ask that you check your email regularly for new information as we seek guidance from local and national directives (i.e., Centers for Disease Control, Pima County Health Department). I recommend visiting the University’s COVID-19 site on a daily basis

We are responsible for our health, so please take good care of yourself by washing your hands, using hand sanitizer, avoiding large crowds of people, contacting Campus Health if you believe you have symptoms, exercising, and spending time outdoors.

Access to Learning Technology

With internet access, you will be able to access your online coursework. The Main and Health Sciences libraries and some computer labs will remain open. The Library will loan equipment for checkout.

Bear Down,
