On February 19th and 20th, the Student Veterans of America hosted their first career skills seminar in the Veterans Education and Transition Services (VETS) Center.  During the career skills seminar off-campus and on-campus organizations such as Beacon Roofing Supply, Arizona Department of Economic Security, and Think Tank, provided veteran students tips on improving their resumes by translating their military experiences into a resume that better reflects their skills in a way that is understood by human resources and hiring managers in civilian companies.  Not only did students receive help with their resumes, but they also learned how to give a proper “elevator pitch”, how to have a successful job interview, and how to properly write a cover letter. The skills learned during the seminar allowed students to feel confident and prepared as they prepare for the University’s upcoming Spring Career Days, an event held at the University every Spring where dozens of employers offer full-time employment and internships to our students. The next step for the Student Veterans of America is planning for the Fall Career Fair where they hope to connect veterans with over 30 employers.

The Student Veterans of America (SVA) is a dedicated network of more than 1,500 on-campus chapters in all 50 states and 4 countries representing more than 750,000 student veterans.  SVA aims to inspire yesterday’s warriors by connecting student veterans with a community of like-minded chapter leaders.  Every day these passionate leaders work to provide the necessary resources, network support, and advocacy to ensure student veterans can effectively connect, expand their skills, and ultimately achieve their greatest potential.  The University of Arizona VETS Center and local SVA chapter expand this mission to all military-connected students, including spouses and dependents.  If anyone has any questions or would like to join the SVA please contact vetsofc@arizona.edu or call the VETS Center at (520) 626-8380.
