Is Your Student “Military-Connected”?
At Veterans Education & Transition Services, we use the term Military-Connected to describe students who served or are still serving in the military, as well as their sons, daughters, wives and husbands. If you look across the University of Arizona’s campuses you’ll find over 4000 of these students. At VETS we’ve got a ton of resources that we either provide for or connect your student to, and YES - these resources are for dependents and spouses, too. It doesn’t matter when your mom was in the Army or if your husband is still serving; we are here for you or your student.
Unfortunately our biggest resources, the VETS Military-Connected Student Centers, are closed until our community reaches a safe time to reopen. The pandemic has taken away that wonderful social interaction that makes the VETS Centers special, but it hasn’t taken away our desire to be there for your students. So then, how can we help? Pretty much any of the services we offer are still available virtually for your student. Here’s what we offer:
Peer Advocacy Liaisons - The PALS team is made of student veterans who have gone through the transition from military to college and understand the many things that make this such a unique experience. PALS stand ready to give information about VA healthcare, applying to grad school, what resources exist on and off campus for mil-connected students, and even find themselves having conversations with incoming students about Tucson in general.
Academic Support - We have a team of student workers who excel in their majors and want to help your student set themselves up for success in the classroom. That might mean meeting one-on-one with students to make a plan to be successful, or helping students understand their chemistry homework.
Weekly Newsletters - We use a weekly newsletter to let your student know what’s going on around campus that might interest them, scholarships they can apply for, and more.
Counseling Services - Dr. Michael Marks has been a member of the VETS team for years now, having joined us after a nearly thirty year career working for the VA. “Doc” is a confidential resource for your student and has helped countless students with their mental health, settling into college, or even navigating divorce and other life events.
Student Veterans of America - VETS is proud to have a relationship with the SVA UArizona chapter. SVA is an ASUA recognized student club with national backing, and their primary focus is to help military-connected students find employment. SVA hosts resume workshops, partners with local and Fortune 500 companies, organizes annual career fairs, and works with students to help them not only find a job but a lasting career that they can be proud of after graduation. Best part is, SVA is always looking for new members.
We know that navigating this pandemic hasn’t been easy, but VETS wants to help where we can. Let your student know about VETS, and encourage them to reach out if they’d like to get involved. We can’t wait to reopen and welcome your student with a handshake and a slice of pizza in the VETS Center!
