Thriving Through Spring

April 6, 2020

How the Thrive Center is supporting students in a digital realm.

As students navigate their new normal, the Thrive Center is here to support them in multiple ways. We focus on the unique assets each student brings with them to college and connect them to campus resources. We also engage students socially and academically, facilitating a sense of community for all Wildcats.

We understand the implications that COVID-19 has on our students, and we have established virtual services to engage and support them as we all work remotely.

Our Fostering Success program is working very closely with Campus Pantry to secure food and deliver basic hygiene items and school supplies to students in the program. Additionally, the Fostering Success team is hosting Netflix parties, Zoom game nights, and study nights for students to continue to connect during this time of isolation.

Thrive Guides are supporting students through peer mentoring, sending out weekly announcements and newsletters, as well as hosting digital workshops that discuss topics such as self-advocacy and preparing to meet with your academic advisor, to staying positive and maintaining a growth mindset. Workshops are open to all student: Thrive Guides Calendar.

Our First Cats Initiatives team is focused on our first-generation college students. They are continuing to host the workforce and graduate school prep workshop series digitally as well as First Cats Wednesday on April 8th. On top of a weekly newsletter, any member of the First Cats team is happy to meet with students virtually or through phone.

The Transfer Student Center is readily available to digitally meet with any student and sends out a weekly newsletter with up-to-date information. They are working to reach out and connect with current transfer students via email and phone.

Strength Coaches are continuing to support students who are in the academic recovery process via phone, email or Zoom. These meetings are designed to progressively support students academically utilizing holistic approaches including creating SMART goals, grade check-ins, strengths assessments and Life Management referrals.

Men’s Outreach Initiative is sending out weekly newsletters with information for students such as Wi-Fi-hotspot areas, academic policy changes, and emergency financial assistance.

We hope our students continue to grow and feel supported even though we don’t see them every day. Whatever the needs of our students are, Thrive Center is here to support them through this transition.

Finally, we send a special CONGRATULATIONS to the May 2020 graduates who are first-generation college students, have been recipients of Arizona Assurance, or transferred to the University of Arizona. We also recognize the family and supporters who have joined them in this college journey. In Thrive Center, we know the completion of a bachelor’s degree is a huge accomplishment for these student groups in particular. For many, they are the first in their family to earn a college degree. We see you! You did it! We celebrate with you that even in current circumstances, YOU THRIVED!

Bear Down, Go Cats!
