Just like the arrival of cooler temperatures, colorful leaves and pumpkins, Fall means it’s time to think about influenza (respiratory “flu”).  While COVID-19 is on everyone’s mind in 2020, it’s important to remember that the flu comes around every year.  The good news is that we have a vaccine that can help prevent flu.

If you’ve ever had the flu, you know how bad it can be.  The respiratory illness (which can range from mild to severe) causes high fever, chills, sore throat, nasal congestion, headache, body aches, and extreme fatigue. When I was a senior at UArizona, I got the flu.  My mom was so worried.   It was a bad case and I’d never been that sick in my life!  Fortunately, I recovered after a long week in bed with a high fever, intense sweating, body-shaking chills, fatigue, and a cough.  I missed a lot of class.  After that experience, I vowed to always get a flu shot.

The best way to prevent flu is by getting vaccinated. It can help prevent it altogether or make a case of flu less severe and shorter in duration.

Flu shots are available for students Monday -Friday by appointment only at our Immunizations Clinic on the ground floor of Campus Health.  It’s easy to make an appointment. For appointments and more info, click here at our flu news webpage. Flu shots are covered by the Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan and most other billable insurances. The cost for the flu shot is $30 without insurance.
