Embracing Challenges, Growing and Learning

Nov. 19, 2021

A primary framework for Student success & Retention Innovation is promoting Growth Mindset. We try to infuse it within all that we do, as we want to help students understand that they can grow and learn. Many students will experience more challenges in college than they have previously. Coursework may be dramatically more difficult for them, they may be experiencing depression, anxiety or other mental health issues.  They may just not know how they fit at the University of Arizona. They may not be having the college experience that they expected or that you expected for them. THIS IS ALL TOTALLY NORMAL.  We believe developing the right mindset will help students thrive.

We want to help students develop a growth mindset and understand they can:

·Embrace challenges

·Persist after failure or setbacks

·Learn from feedback or criticism

·See their efforts as worthwhile

We send out weekly motivational text messages, they (or you) can sign up by texting MONDAY to 70542. We also have the WildcatConnections Instagram where we encourage student to connect to the University of Arizona and embrace a growth mindset.

If you are concerned you can always talk to SOS!

We have helped students figure out issues with living situations, helped calculate grades, provided dining advice and been a sounding board when students are concerned about all the things thrown their way.   Students and families alike can reach out to us about anything Arizona related, and we are happy to help.  If we don’t know the answer to a question or it’s something out of our hands we will make sure to connect people with the right resources and follow up to make sure it all works out.

What you didn’t know you needed to know:

Priority Registration-  Students can register for classes in November.  This means that balances need to be paid, and they need to have all holds cleared before they can register.  If they aren’t sure if they want to register for Spring, they can let us know what challenges they are working through

What are holds?  - If a student hasn’t done something (signed paperwork, not turned in immunization record, met with their advisor) they MAY have a hold on their account. They can check this on UAccess, and should get it taken care of ASAP. They may not be able to register if they have a hold.

Figuring out grades – Most students can track their grades in D2L (Desire to Learn), but sometimes have to do some math to figure out their average. They can’t give you access to their D2L account, but can share how they are doing.  We can also help them figure out the grades if they are having trouble.

Campus Health & CAPS- Counseling & Psychological Services – We have staff on campus who can work with students that are finding managing stress and their mental health difficult.  We also have a health center, which is the closest place for students who live on campus to go when they need to get checked out.
