I am senior at The University of Arizona. As part of my summer internship, I am developing public health graphics and messaging to support the university re-open safety, including messaging around face coverings. Face coverings are essential to preventing the spread of COVID-19. As a student at the UArizona studying Public Health, it is especially important for me to communicate to the students why face coverings are important. We wear a face covering to protect others. When every person in a public space or business is wearing a face covering, the rate of transmission of the virus is greatly reduced. This is because the covering can prevent a person who is infected (even if they are asymptomatic) from spreading the virus to those who are not infected. By wearing a face covering, we can show more at risk members of the community that we care. COVID-19 is a disease that can affect some people more seriously than others, so even if you are not personally affected by the virus, you should still wear a covering to protect the health of others. Going into this semester, I know we all feel uncertainty. I know how easy it is to feel helpless, but one way we can all contribute to keeping our community safe is by wearing face coverings when going out in public.
