Beginning September 12, 2016, SafeRide began operations using an app, which allows students to request a free ride with just a few taps on their smart phone. SafeRide collaborated with Parking and Transportation Services and TransLoc, a transportation company, to create our mobile platform. The app’s name is “TransLoc Rider” and can be found in the App Store or Google Play Store.
With the app implemented, SafeRide is hoping to continue to grow in its operations and ability to serve more students who need a ride. Furthermore, the app will help SafeRide reach sub-sections of the student population which previously could not be accommodated. A great example of this is the University’s students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. Prior to the app, there was really no way for a deaf student to request a ride, as our system ran entirely through phone calls. Thanks to the app, we are now able to provide service to any student with an auditory disability.
Beyond serving different groups of students, SafeRide is also hoping to raise awareness of our program to more students. With the new system, all routing is done automatically through TransLoc’s tools, which should help our nightly operations become significantly more efficient. This will allow us to transport more passengers while maintaining a short wait time for rides.
While the app has drastically changed the way SafeRide looks from an operations standpoint, our program’s mission has remained the same. We are still here nightly to provide a safe, alternative form of transportation for our student body. All of this wouldn’t be possible without the continued support of our students, alumni, and parents who value the importance of safety on and around campus.
